Rethinking Oil

Is Oil Paint Overrated?

With the “green movement” cruising at top speed these days, many of our customers are understandably concerned about reducing the toxicity of the products they use inside their homes. From carpet, to paint, to the coatings on their wood floors, consumers are becoming more conscious of the wear and tear these products have on their immune systems, and the immune systems of their children. It is nice to know that there are many affordable choices for those looking to clean up the air inside their homes.

Oil paint has been touted over the years as being the most reliable and durable option for doors, trim and woodwork. While this “old-school” perspective was once very true, it is no longer the case. Oil paints have nearly 3x the volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) as some of the most durable water-based paints on the market. This means that they are nearly 3x as toxic. These water-based products are EQUAL to the oil products in terms of durability, longevity and general performance.  They are better for you AND your environment, and they are comparable in price to oil paints.  Many manufacturers even offer products for your walls and ceilings that have low to zero VOC’s!
